FAQ

Tap a question to expand. Clear answers for families, caregivers, facilities, and referring teams.

How do I know if this is urgent?
Call 911 if there is severe choking, breathing difficulty, sudden inability to swallow saliva, or stroke-like symptoms. Otherwise, coughing during meals, wet voice, prolonged meals, or weight loss are signs a consult may help.
What should I have ready for an in-home assessment?
Helpful items include typical foods and drinks, a medication list, dentures or feeding equipment, and a caregiver who usually assists during meals when possible.
Do you take insurance?
Rainier Swallow Care is private-pay. Superbills are available upon request for possible out-of-network reimbursement depending on your insurance plan.
Do you provide VFSS/MBSS or FEES?
Instrumental studies are completed in medical facilities. If an instrumental study is appropriate, I can help determine the best questions it should answer and coordinate referral options with your medical team.
How does swallowing support help hospice patients?
Hospice consultations focus on comfort feeding, reducing distress during meals, caregiver coaching, and helping families make informed feeding decisions aligned with goals of care.
Does hospice mean food or liquids must be stopped?
Not necessarily. Many patients continue eating and drinking for comfort and enjoyment. Swallow consultations help balance safety, comfort, and patient preference.
How can Parkinson’s disease affect swallowing?
Parkinson’s can affect airway protection, muscle coordination, sensation, and fatigue. Swallow support helps maintain safety, medication swallowing ability, and quality of life as symptoms change.
When should someone with Parkinson’s consider swallowing support?
Support is helpful with coughing during meals, prolonged eating, weight loss, pneumonia, pill swallowing difficulty, or noticeable changes in voice/wetness after swallowing.
Can caregivers receive training?
Yes. Caregiver coaching is a major part of services and includes positioning, pacing, fatigue support, recognizing warning signs, and a written protocol for consistency.
Do physicians refer patients to Rainier Swallow Care?
Yes. With patient permission, I collaborate with neurologists, hospice teams, home health, and primary care providers, and can provide summary reports and coordination guidance.
How does Rainier Swallow Care support referring providers?
Support includes functional recommendations aligned with medical goals, caregiver coaching, written protocols, and assistance clarifying when an instrumental study may be appropriate.
Why is swallowing care private pay?
Private-pay care allows extended in-home evaluations, real-meal observation, caregiver training, detailed written plans, and flexible scheduling not typically supported by insurance models.
What value does private-pay swallowing consultation provide?
Many families pursue consultation to reduce aspiration risk, improve hydration and nutrition, reduce caregiver stress, clarify decisions, and prevent avoidable hospitalizations.
What if feeding my loved one feels stressful or scary?
This is common. Swallow consultation provides clear safety guidance, step-by-step feeding strategies, and caregiver coaching to reduce anxiety and build confidence.
What areas do you serve?
In-home services are available throughout the Seattle area (including Seattle, Shoreline, Edmonds, and Bellevue). Telehealth is available when clinically appropriate.
Can MBSS/VFSS footage be used on the website?
Only if footage is properly licensed, fully de-identified, and approved for commercial use. Otherwise, educational clips with explicit commercial-use permission are recommended.
